The Transformer – Published in Pen In Hand – July 2024
I slip from the comfort
of worn jeans and soft T-shirt,
I sniff their scent
the scent of comfort, the softness of aging
I place them with tenderness
in a bureau drawer where
they rest cradled
like a napping infant
awaiting the return of Mother’s love
I change into the black knit dress,
the dress with the macramé sleeves
and the ten-inch macramé hem
I feel it hug my arms, caress my body
offering comfort and confidence
I twirl about watching
the hemline swing
cinch my waist in a black silk belt
the one with sparkling buckle of bling
I sprinkle fresh-scented fairy dust
slide into glass beaded slippers
feel myself transformed
in the magic mirror
reflecting the new elegant me
I exit on the arm of my prince
float from view
leaving the napping love child
awaiting my return.
